What is the Safety Standard of
Excellence program?

The Safety Standard of Excellence program, developed by the American Staffing Association and National Safety Council, promotes the safety and health of temporary employees placed on assignment with host employers. The SSE program also supports compliance with federal and state occupational safety and health requirements pertaining to the employers’ shared responsibility for temporary worker safety. Further, the program defines and measures firms against staffing industry safety best practices.

This program is completely voluntary and entails a rigorous assessment of corporate office policies and procedures, as well as validation across a sample of our branch offices. We earned the SSE mark because our firm demonstrated to an independent third party that we’re successfully following our industry’s safety best practices.

Why partner with a staffing company that has earned the Safety Standard of Excellence mark?

We care about the safety of temporary workers placed with our clients. Protecting temporary workers is our priority and the right thing to do. We consider ourselves partners with you—the client—to ensure our workers’ safety while on the job at your location. When temporary workers remain safe, you reduce injuries and illnesses that generally must be reported to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration on your OSHA 300 log, and we reduce the expense of workers’ compensation. We both save time, effort, and cost when there are no safety incidents involving temporary workers. It’s this partnership mindset that has workplaces. They must determine what conditions exist at client work sites and what hazards may be encountered, and engage with you as the host employer to protect the temporary worker. In addition, the staffing company has the duty to inquire and verify that the client has fulfilled its responsibilities for a safe workplace.

Clients that supervise temporary workers must provide a site-specific safety orientation—including how to report and obtain treatment for injuries, emergency procedures, work rules, and hazard communication programs. Such clients must also provide on-the-job training specific to the hazards of the assigned work, required personal protective equipment (PPE) and instruction on how to use it, and operational instructions for any machinery and tools or equipment the worker might be using. Clients must ensure that temporary workers receive the same exact training their internal employees do.

Clients that exercise day-to-day supervision must also record a temporary worker’s injury on their

Safety is much more than the avoidance of OSHA citations and fines. We are proactive when it comes to the safety of our temporary workers. We partner with you to avoid the costly production disruption, negative media attention, and employee distrust that can be the byproducts of a safety incident.

Why do staffing companies choose to earn the Safety Standard of Excellence mark?

Earning the Safety Standard of Excellence mark shows commitment to selecting and screening applicants, ensuring their general safety training and orientation, evaluating the work site hazards employees may be exposed to, ensuring necessary protections are in place, and instituting collaborative incident management protocols. It is important to realize that not all staffing companies are committed to safety; however, we are. We believe this will ultimately benefit you, our client.

Both staffing firms and clients have roles in complying with workplace health and safety requirements, and they share responsibility for ensuring temporary workers’ safety and health.

What are the staffing company’s and client’s responsibilities for temporary workers?

Both staffing firms and clients have roles in complying with workplace health and safety requirements, and they share responsibility for ensuring temporary workers’ safety and health. Staffing firms recruit and screen workers; handle payroll; withhold taxes; provide health insurance, other benefits, and workers’ compensation—alleviating human resource-related paperwork challenges and allowing clients like you to concentrate on your business. Staffing firms also provide general safety orientation that includes topics such as general hazard communication training for temporary workers placed at client work sites.

Staffing firms have a duty to place workers in safe OSHA 300 logs; report any injury leading to inpatient hospitalization, amputation, or loss of an eye to OSHA within the required time frame; and provide the staffing firm with pertinent details to perform its own investigation and manage the workers’ compensation claim. States that have OSHA-approved state plans may have additional requirements.

How does the staffing company
maintain contact with workers?

We will routinely communicate with our temporary workers throughout the assignment and verify that they continue to work in a safe workplace. We encourage our workers to report any hazards and inform us if their assigned tasks are altered from those previously agreed upon.

We appreciate your partnership and thank you for providing a safe workplace for our temporary workers, and we look forward to a long and healthy relationship.
